To achieve this level candidates must complete five core mandatory units common to each group and four or five optional units reflecting their job roles and responsibilities:
201: Prepare to undertake duties (mandatory)
202: Assist in the provision of a safe and secure work environment (mandatory)
203: Obtain and communicate information (mandatory)
204: Develop and maintain productive working relationships (mandatory)
205: Maintain & develop you knowledge, understanding & skills (mandatory)
In addition to the above, each pathway has other mandatory units and, in some cases, optional units, as set out below.

217: Identify and respond to deviations from the planned service
218: Implement plans to meet operational requirements
219: Operate control room equipment to meet operation requirements

221: Provide protection to meet operational requirements
222: Identify and react to symptoms of engineering faults and failures
223: Control the utilization of rolling stock to meet maintenance requirements
